The new Union Budget 2013 did not prove too helpful for the mobile phone segment, as the government has increased the excise duty on handsets from 1 to 6 percent. As a result of this sudden increment in duty, most of the mobile manufacturing companies have planned to increase the prices of their high demanding phones. Samsung was the first one to initiate the hike and following it, Micromax and LG also increased the prices of their selected smartphones. The price of Micromax A116 Canvas HD has registered a price hike of Rs. 14,499, which was earlier available for Rs. 13,990. On the other side, LG Optimus G is now up for Rs. 32,990, a sudden increase of nearly Rs. 2,000. Before this, the phone could be purchased for Rs. 30,999, though the increased price is still less than what the company is offering, that is, INR 34,500.
