Toshiba has announced a new sensor for mobile phones. The sensor is capable to deliver high-image quality by taking images at a resolution of 13 megapixels. Toshiba used back side illumination (BSI) in the new CMOS sensor that gives higher low-light performance and comes along with integrated color noise reduction (CNR). The 1.12 micrometer sensor will get fit into the camera module of 8.5mm x 8.5mm and delivers image quality equal to 1.4 micrometer pixel image sensor. "As smartphones and PC tablets are getting compact, the physical size of image sensors needs is reduced accordingly without sacrificing the image quality. Although, the miniaturization sensor would reduce the amount of light entering into the pixel which impacts image quality. Toshiba takes the challenge of pixel miniaturization with its latest CMOS image sensor." said Andrew Burt, VP, Analog and Imaging Business, LSI Group, Toshiba.
