On one side tech savvies are pronouncing this year to be a blessing for the mobile segment, as lot of major announcements and launch are expected in the year 2013, while on the other hand, the recent union budget 2013 by the government seems to be a spoil sport. According to the budget, all the phones that are priced above Rs. 2,000 will get more expensive from this fiscal year. The hike in price is due to the lift in the excise duty. Previously, this excise duty was standing at 1 per cent only but this year, the duty jumps to 6 per cent. A sudden increment of 5 per cent is a matter of concern for those mobile manufacturers who creates entry level and mid-range phones, as the rise in excise duty would result in negative impact on their prices. This step might lead a huge disturbance in the mobile arena, specially on those gadgets that are to be priced below INR 10,000.
