• The upgrade might take time to finally make it to phones as carriers need to push it
  • The Moto G4 series gets a miss in the Oreo update list
  • The upcoming Moto X4 too isn’t featured in the platform upgrade list

With the Android 8.0 Oreo hitting the platforms and Google’s devices – Pixel and Nexus – getting the new updates, the other smartphone manufacturers are also mulling to add this new update to their devices. Gradually we’ll see most of the global handset makers adopting the new Android Oreo in their devices. Among others, the American major Motorola has come forward and listed the names of its range of devices soon getting the Oreo update.

Here’s the list of Motorola phones due for the Android Oreo update:

  • Moto Z2 Force – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon
  • Moto Z2 Play – Verizon, unlocked
  • Moto Z Force – Verizon
  • Moto Z – Verizon, unlocked
  • Moto Z Play – Verizon, unlocked
  • Moto G5S Plus – unlocked
  • Moto G5 Plus – unlocked
  • Moto G5 – unlocked

What’s surprising in this list is that Motorola’s budget phones like the Moto G4 Play, Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus are skipped. Launched in 2016, they were able to receive the last upgrade of Nougat, however, now it appears that was the last major update these handsets got. Moreover, one cannot expect too much updates in budget phones like the Moto G4 series.

Besides, the listed phones won’t have a problem in upgrading in India but their US counterpart might have one. In America, Motorola can only ready the mechanism for the update but the final push is required from their carriers like AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc. However, the carrier dependency is only till the time the phone is locked, the unlocked smartphones can be upgraded without any difficulty.

Expected to be the first Android One phone to launch in the US, the Moto X4 also gets a miss in the Oreo upgrade list. Although, the upcoming Moto X4 hasn’t been launched anywhere in the world, it can be safely said that an Android Oreo update is being worked upon.

Despite Motorola giving a miss to the G4 series phone, we expect it to soon update them with the Oreo platform to remain in the hunt for the top handset maker globally as these budget phones are voluminous products.
