Minutes after a Reddit user spotted Facebook asking for entering the name as on Aadhaar while signing up on the social media platform, the news spread like a forest fire on the internet. Replying to speculations of Aadhaar now being mandatory to create a Facebook account, the social media giant has issues a statement in order to clarify the situation.
The company labelled it as a test and said that mention of “Aadhaar” in the sign-up process was part of a test ran “with a small number of users in India”. The goal, apparently, was to “help new users understand how to sign up to Facebook with their real name and connect with their friends and family.”
The prompt was available to a very small percentage of users that those who tried to sign up on the website from their smartphone browser. But the company has now made it clear that it was just a result of a test.
